Richard asks…

Do you have a right to your dental x-rays?

I went to a dentist last year.I had a plan “A” & a plan “B”.for fixing my teeth.I had asked him to please submit both plans seperately for pre-estimate to my insurance company. both plans were put together and extractions weren’t listed .i called after waiting awhile.to asked if they would seperate & re-submit the plans to my insurance company.i really needed to what debt i would owe.( i had to have Carpal tunnel surgery on my right hand in ’06) i wanted to be sure i could pay my part for both teeth and hand. .well, i waited & waited.i finally called my insurance company a month later.and they said they never re-submitted the plans. So,as “07 i had to find a new dentist & start all over again.but the first dentist i pay my $50 deductible and about $200.00 for one extraction. i felt i had no choice but to extract the really bad tooth.and go on with the hand surgery. I could wait for the pre-estimates any longer.Do i know have a right to ask for my x-rays,they don’t need them?

Michael is pretty much on the money with one exception. The new dental office CAN NOT request copies for you legally. That is part of the HIPAA law. Some offices will do it for you but most will ask you to either call or might even have a pre-printed fax sheet to send that you would have to sign. Thats how i do it.
As far as charging for copying of xrays, the law clearly states that a reasonable fee may be charged to duplicate. The law also clearly states that outstanding balances DO NOT need to be paid off prior to copying. A lot of offices will hold balances over your head. Get your films and get another opinion.

CONSTANT INFECTIONS, Throat, lung, sinus, uterus Please, help if you know anything?

I’m in tears. I am desperate for an answer because I know normal people don’t go through what I do. I’m 32. I’ve been suffering from unusual and cruel intense infections for at least a decade and a half. It goes like this; Everyone gets a cold. I get bronchitis then pneumonia if I don’t go on STRONG sometimes INTRAVENOUS antibiotics within often days of acquiring illness that everyone else recovers from. Repeat scenareo with a dozen extremely severe strep throat bouts that get me to 104.5 fever within 2 days, or less, and now sinus infections. I have had my tonsils removed, then it moved to my sinuses. I have also near died 3x by near bleeding to death after two miscarriages and then the birth of my only son- a miracle baby that had complications. (so did I.) I have been tested several times, recently and repeatedly through the years for mono, HIV/AIDS, white blood cell count, all that. I eat decent. I am reasonably active. When all my friends were experiencing young life and going to college I spent it battling severe infections. I have been battling a horrible sinus infection since June (6 months) recently and I’m also bleeding from the uterus now for 2 months. I have been on 5? rounds of antibiotics, one for 3 weeks. It just comes back. Now I have the sinus infection and a bronchial infection coming on. I know because I’ve been through it 100 times. I’ve now missed over a week of work and had an on and off fever for 6 weeks. Please, help. Dr’s are puzzled. I’m adopted so I don’t know my family history. I take a fantastic multivitamin- a prenatal. I take vitamin c. I am not allergic to anything, I’ve been tested. I’ve also had several “undiagnosed” weird issues like very strange ovarian cysts that resolved themselves, and both my hips I cannot lie on at night as my legs fall asleep- even when I’m not heavy. The latter is a typical condition of an elderly male, and is super rare on both sides. I’ve also had double Carpal tunnel surgery. Please help, do you know anyone like this? Many drs, especially my recent gyno suspects a systematic issue. I have seen an infectious disease dr with no results recently. My throat and glands are constantly swollen as I’m always feeling sick and fighting something. When I travel, I almost always end up in the hospital with a horrible infection of the lungs, throat or sinus within a couple days, making me trapped in my home. Please… help
the hospital dosen’t take me seriously unless I’m spiking a horrible fever. The issue is that it keeps coming back, all of it, over and over and over, severe- for years. I have seen my primary 2x in the last week.

I would really recommend checking out Celiac Disease. Celiac Disease is an auto-immune disease where the body attacks itself, specifically the villi in the intestines. So your body is constantly suffering from malnutrition and inflammation. One oddity with this disease is while many people have problems that docs believe are due to vitamin deficiencies, they can still test within normal ranges for many of the vitamins typically tested for.

- miscarriages and problems during pregnancy are common, because as the baby grows, the body’s lack of nutrients cause some serious problems.
- issues with anything involving the immune system are common – frequent illness is very common, as are complications with any illness you come down with, and slow recovery. The immune system doesn’t have the nutritional resources to work properly.
- soft tissue injuries or repetitive strain injuries like Carpal tunnel are common, because the body is always a bit inflamed AND can’t get enough nutrients to maintain healthy soft tissues.
- circulation and neurological issues like numbness, tingling, legs and arms falling asleep too easily are common.

There’s a horde more symptoms. I have a link below for more.

It used to be thought that this disease was extremely rare and the only symptoms for this were stomach problems and being underweight. That has now been shown to be completely incorrect. It seems to be affecting 1 in 133. The symptoms can affect any bodily system that needs nutrients and many sufferers are actually overweight.

But this correct information has literally only been in the medical texts at medical schools for less than 10 years. So many doctors coming out of med school earlier than that have no idea that your symptoms could be related to this disease. They would be unlikely to test for it.

A blood panel is the main test for this, but there are recent blood tests that are better, with fewer false negatives, that sometimes have to be asked for specifically. You’ll likely have to tell your doc which tests you want, if this is a concern.

If a doctor says you could not possibly have this disease? That’s a sign they are completely ignorant. There is no way to tell if someone has this disease or not without testing, as there are many cases with few to no symptoms at all, so there is no way that a doctor can tell whether you have it or not without a test. Insist on a test.

Okay, now for some good news.

If it Is this disease, as diseases go, you luck out, big time. Because it is the only auto-immune disease in the world that doctors figured out WHAT makes the body attack itself: ingesting gluten (a protein in wheat, rye, and barley). When gluten comes into contact with the intestines, the body attacks those sections of the intestines. If one stops ingesting gluten (and anything that has been gluten contaminated. You’ll want to check that out on Celiac sites), then the body stops attacking itself. The intestines heal. The body starts absorbing nutrients, and everything starts healing that can heal.

There are no drugs for this disease, not available, and not needed. Just a diet change, and that’s it.

Now, if the celiac test is negative? I’d take a look at gluten intolerance. A recent study proved that gluten intolerance exists in a form that is not celiac disease, and seems to cause nearly as many problems for the people who suffer from it. It hasn’t been studied yet at all, so currently, there is no test for it, just doing the gluten free diet and seeing how symptoms react.

If neither of those pan out, other auto-immune diseases are frequently the cause of systemic issues like this. Crohn’s disease is another gut one that causes inflammation, nutritional deficiencies, and such.

Wishing you the best of luck, and don’t give up trying to find the answer! Truly, much, much sympathy from over here, from someone who has been there.

Charles asks…

What happened to my sister?

I’m the youngest of 5, two brothers and two sisters. I was always closest to one sister (the one closest to me in age). We did everything together as kids. We all grew up, got married and moved away from home, but my sister’s marriage didn’t work out. She got a divorce, but became very religious and after a few years she married someone else. Her new husband is very religious and now they have been married about 6 years, but my sister is no longer the same person she used to be. She never calls anyone in the family. Whenever I call her she is always in a bad mood and I have to keep talking to her to cheer her up before we can talk like old times, but she never says anything is wrong in her marriage. I invite her and her husband to all of my parties, cookouts and family get togethers, but she never comes. She had carpal tunnel surgery and never regained strength in her hands so she’s on disability. Her husband drives her everywhere she needs to go and does most of the cooking and cleaning. She relies on him for just about everything. Is it just me, or does she no longer want to have anything to do with her family? What would you do? Should I just give up on her and stop calling?
I don’t think she realizes she’s doing anything different. When I mention anything about her not coming around, she just says she’s busy. It’s like you have to make an appointment just to spend a little time with her.
Yes, she’s religious, as in Jehovah’s witness

It sounds like your sister is suffering from a major depressive disorder. She should talk to her doctor about this.

Lisa asks…

Can my aunt be fired after being diagnosed with cancer and needing time off?

My aunt has just been diagnosed with ovarian cancer. She is currently on medical leave for an unrelated surgery for her hands (carpal tunnel). She works at a bank and has been working there for over 15 years. She is worried that she will lose her health insurance if she is fired. Can she be fired if she needs time off for tests/treatment? I know it would be unethical for them to fire her but could they? Also what options does she have as far as insurance is concerned. Does her insurance carry over if she is fired? Can she buy into cobra if she is fired and if so how long? Thanks in advance.

admin answers:

Well I imagine they can fire you or lay you off for any reason they want. The company can’t just leave an empty space where someone needs to be working and they can’t hire someone to fill your spot then fire that person when you come back.. Her insurance options would be to fill out the paperwork for COBRA after her insurance ends. She would pay full price for it and it would be with the same insurance company and it would be through the bank, same as before. If she’s not terminated, but uses up all her leave, she won’t get a paycheck and will still have to pay for her own health insurance.

Yes Admiral, they can..terminated for not working. She’s already used her medical leave time.

Donna asks…

Feeling of being choked or lump in throat?

I am a 38 year old woman. I have had a feeling of tightness or lump in the throat off and on for about 8 years now. in my early 20′s I had been a regular marijuana user. I quit for a couple of years and that is when i started noticing that just about daily my throat would become uncomfortable with a feeling of being choked or like a big lump in my neck. I started using marijuana again on a regular basis about 5 years ago. during that time I had tried to stop smoking and when I would I would notice that the tightness returned. It would get so bad that I would start smoking again. Several months ago I had surgery for carpal tunnel and was not able to light the lighter to smoke so I stopped. within 4 days i noticed the lump sensation was back. I went to see my doctor and explained everything (didnt tell her about my marijuana use tho) so she sent me for an mri and to a ent specialist. He said i had acid reflux which i did and prescribed ormeprazole. The ormeprazole works great and I dont get heartburn any longer. for many months now I have made numerous attempts to stop smoking marijuana but after a few days the tightness becomes so unbearable that I start using again. I really really really want to stop smoking marijuana but it seems as tho this lump in my throat is somehow related? I have read a lot about anxiety and panic disorder which almost everyone in my family has and takes meds for except me. I cant help but think its related to anxiety and that the marijuana acts as a stress reliever? im a very hard working, positive, funny and really good person. i have a wonderfull family who is aware of this situation. even my teenage kids know because I am so open about everything with them. i have a very stressfull and demanding full time job but I absolutly love what I do and have fun doing it. even tho i dont feel like im really ever stressed because of my easy going nature, im sure I am stressed out most of the time. What has made the most sense to me is a doctor who wrote that most likely it is a muscle spasm in the throat or esophogus. he stated alcohol and meditation helped as well as prescribing valium. Today it has been two weeks since I have smoked and the tightness is so severe that i am trying to decide if i should go to the ER or try to find some marijuana to smoke. Its so frustrating to me because i dont feel addicted to marijuana I have no other problems when I stop, dont think about it, no memory probs NOT One single issue except the damn lump in my neck. Well I really need advice, I just cant live this way either Im just going to have to continue to smoke or get on some other addicting medication from a doctor. Hmm which is worse… I need help!!!

admin answers:

You’re self medicating your anxiety by smoking pot. Get some help. Your kids will be better down the road seeing mom deal with problems and find positive solutions.
