Questions to anyone who had surgery for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

I have had it for 30 years, but I didn’t get a definite diagnosis until 1997 because that was the first time it was detected on nerve conduction testing.
If you had the surgery, how long was the recovery time? How bad was it? Were you totally unable to use your hands during recovery?
Thanks.

I had my surgery, performed laproscopically, a few years ago.
I couldn’t use my hand at all for 2 weeks, it was in a sling, and it was still in a bandage and sore for another 4 to 6 weeks after that. But nothing too bad in the way of pain, I just have to use my hands for work and couldn’t.

The surgery was no where near as bad as I thought would be and glad I had it done. It was worth all the inconvienance caused.
I had my mum nursing me for a change. I did not make a very good patient apparently!

Go and get it done it’s a relief.

Carpal Tunnel Surgery?

I am having surgery for my Carpal tunnel, but my dr wants to do both hands at once. I am currently looking for a job…should I wait to look for a job and let him do both hands at once or should i find a job and just do one hand then go back at a later time and get the other done. Also has anyone else had the surgery, what was it like, did you have a quick recovery, did you have staples or stitches if so how many?? I know I should ask my dr these questions and I will at my next appt. I just like to hear personal experiences

Ok my mother had this done and shared EVERY detail with me so. She was exaclty in your positions she had just started a new job in a resteraunt kitchen. She opted to do one hand at a time. She had stiches and sort of a wrist/hand brace. It looked like a glove. It took her a couple weeks to recover and she liked having the one hand free to do everything she needed. If she got the other one done at the same time she wouldnt have been able to dress herself or anything. So doing one at a time gives you capabilities of taking care of yourself. The docotor recommended do both at once but that could be awhile without being able to use BOTH hands.
Hope this helps!

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Has anyone had the surgery for this problem?

I’m on a waiting list to have the surgery on both hands/wrists. I’m just wondering how long recovery is etc…

They’re doing one hand and then the other another time.
I’m a bus driver and wondering how long I’d be off work for?

Thanks in advance…
Thanks…I was told that they will cut into my palm from the wrist towards the middle space between the second and third finger. SO I guess it’ll be the longer recovery time :(

admin answers:

If you get conventional surgery, each hand takes about 1 week or more to recover depending on the skill of the surgeon.

If you get endoscopic surgery, each hand takes about 2-3 days to recover. Endoscopic surgery allows the surgeon to do the surgery using a small camera to ensure accuracy. This is the best method, which obviously has the shortest recovery time.

Standard surgery complete = 2.5 or more weeks recovery.
Endoscopic surgery complete = 1 week or less recovery.

Rotator cuff surgery and carpel tunnel surgery?

I have 2 complete tears and a partial tear of my rotator cuff. (Workman’s comp, I’m an RN) This happened in Nov. and since there has been such a delay in timing (due to Workman’s comp) I have also developed carpal tunnel and am having both surgeries at once. Now I cannot lift or extend my right arm,. surgery is still not scheduled and hopefully will be in the next few weeks. Dr.s all agree carpal tunnel is from shoulder injury. I haven’t seen the ortho since I lost the ability to move my arm about 2 weeks ago. Saw the reg. Workman’s comp dr. At that time I “popped” a tendon that cost the mobility of my arm. Still working on light duty until surgery. Doing paperwork but still hard since I can’t lift anything or use my right arm except from the hand. How long am I looking at being off work. I have a vacation planned for Sept. and want to be able to enjoy it. Any ideas on recovery. The ortho can’t even tell me what to expect yet since he hasn’t seen me since Jan. when the MRI was done. Since then WC was fighting over the carpal tunnel and now all agree both need to done. what do I have to look forward to?

admin answers:

What kind of surgery is being proposed? I assume CT release and open shoulder surgery (not arthroscpic)…. Is that right? As you already know from being a nurse, recovery time really depends not only on frequency & intensity of post-op treatment, but also your age. The younger you are, the faster you can rehab and recover.

Good luck and best wishes.
